International Orientation

Arrival

Your first few days in Starkville will be a busy and exciting time. In addition to meeting with your academic advisors and registering for courses, you will be settling into a new home and tending to your basic needs, including housing, food, health insurance, medical screening, and finances (banking, employment, social security numbers).

The International Services staff will do everything we can to assist you. We strongly recommend that you secure housing prior to arrival. Information on housing options is available at the Housing & Residence Life website.

Immigration Orientation & Check-In

All incoming F-1 and J-1 students and scholars are required to attend one mandatory immigration session prior to the beginning of the program. At the immigration orientation, non-immigrant visa holders receive information regarding the rules and regulations of their F-1 or J-1 status in the United States, and the type of services offered by International Services at MSU.

Students should bring the following documents to orientation so a copy can be made for your immigration file.

  1. Valid Passport
  2. F-1 or J-1 visa stamp
  3. MSU issued I-20 or DS-2019

*From July 31-August 24, Immigration sessions will be held on Mondays at 10 and Thursdays at 2pm. For the exact schedule, see below:

Attention:

The Social Security Administration visits the International Services unit each fall (July/August) to take applications for students that have offers of employment and need a SSN card. If you need to contact the SSA at a time other than during the annual visit, their office is located at 1089C Stark Road, Starkville, Mississippi. The phone number for their office is 662-323-9211.
